Full marks to Mapusa Municipality workers for their fight to protect their freedom of speech

August 10, 2017

Our congratulations to the workers of the Mapusa Municipality. They have acted swiftly and clearly when their freedom to talk to the media was removed. They received a memo from the chief officer to stop talking to the media and immediately launched a pen-down strike. They called off their strike only after the chairperson gave them an assurance. The assurance was not assuring enough so they complained to the Goa Municipal Employees Association which has served a strike notice on the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) chief officer to withdraw the memo banning staff from talking to media persons.

The Association has given the MMC until August 22 to withdraw the memo, failing which municipal employees will go on strike. Even when they work, Mapusa town is in such a mess, imagine the hell it will be, if they go on strike.

Every day the BJP government is exposed in trying to take away the several freedoms that we have. We use the word ‘freedoms’ deliberately because we do not have freedom. Our lives are regulated by the priorities of 40 under-educated men and women we have elected to legislate laws for us. We are willing to bet all 40 bar none, have absolutely no idea of what is expected of them in their constituencies, or what is expected of them for the State of Goa. They know only two things: follow orders dictated by their party power brokers and help themselves, their families and friends, build fortunes. Beyond that the fab 40 haven’t got a clue. They are totally unprepared for the wrath of the people, if and when it does happen.

Enough of water has flown under the bridge for people to show their ‘wrath’. The story of ‘Goan Crabs’ and sussegadponn is indeed very true. The same old thugs get elected by the callous electorate without paying any attention to Goem , goemkar and goemkarponn !
